Are 40 denier tights opaque or sheer?

Semi-opaque. At rest they look solid; stretched over the knee or thigh a little skin shows through. If you want no show-through at all, choose 80 denier or above.

How do I choose a colour?

Black, Anthracite and Midnight are the everyday neutrals. Burgundy, Plum and Purple add colour to a black or grey outfit; Cocoa, Cinnamon and Cement are warm neutrals for camel and cream; Sapphire and Light Navy pair with denim and navy tailoring. White is for costume and dancewear.

Which size should I choose?
